KRONOS

Director Frédéric Tachou
France
Runtime 20:00
Completion Date:

The film Kronos explores the notion of making a so-called “family film”. Shot during different moments of family life, the film sets out to establish links between the destiny awaiting a father-figure and those of his children - and their different claims to power and destruction - with that of Kronos, the king of the Titans from the Golden age of ancient Greek mythology. This exploration is above all a personal reflection on one’s own destiny, death.

Are you holding me, or am I holding myself?

This film is a self study examining the relationship between our minds and our bodies, our thoughts and our actions, and the sometimes insurmountable gaps between what we think we want to feel and what we actually experience.

In this film I pose the question “Are you holding me, or am I holding myself?” and I attempt to answer it through a movement study describing the relationship between myself as an individual-a sensitive and receptive human body, and between various external influences. I am placing the human body in extreme conditions. Sometimes existing in a more grounded or neutral reality, while at other times existing in a warmer more surreal world, I investigate what it is to create and struggle with certain boundaries that stem from self reflection/self torment over past experiences, and the means by which we think we can achieve an ideal emotional or physical state.

Does our self perception hinder us? In recognizing our patterns, good and bad, are we really just making the realization that we are our own worst enemies? The realization that I sought through this film is that we are all looking for a human connection, someone to hold us as well as someone to hold.

Strangers

Director  Lisa Seidenberg
Austria
Runtime   2:51
Completion Date: May 16, 2017
poetry film

Original title is "Die Fremden", a poem by Rose Auslander, 1901-1988. Auslander was a Jewish German poet from Czernowitz, then part of Austro-Hungarian Empire and she later lived in New York. Her first book of poetry was destroyed by Nazis. Many of her poems are concerned with moving and homeland. Most of the footage was shot in Austria. Although written in another time, I wanted to give new life to the poem by showing the alienation of modern travel.

Director  Kimberly Burleigh
United States
Runtime   4:38
Completion Date: August 14, 2015

"Cannot Predict Now" is a short experimental 3D computer animation. It features a spherical form that continuously evolves to perform its function as a predictor of the future. The sphere begins as a magic crystal soccer ball, then shatters to become a vessel in a tolijabee, a Korean birthday ritual in which the baby picks up various items that attract him or her. The items that the child picks are said to foretell the child’s future. Then, after a brief phase of capnomancy, a method of divination using smoke, a rotorelief/wheel-of-fortune emerges and spins out a vague prediction.

The rich man suffers a road accident. Instantly, like a present Job, he loses his fortune, family and health. During the state of clinical death, his soul fights for the deliverance from suffering, for understanding.

The film is an attempt to show the conflict between the soul and the human body, the clashing forces: the will of the human in opposite to the divine will. To surrender to fate is it the highest skill or fatalistic passivity? The film's inspiration is the motif of Job's experience of God, Alawite beliefs and Fazil Say's music "Alevi Dedeler rakı masasında" performed by LutosAir Quintet from National Forum of Music in Wroclaw.
